“Natural” can mean just about anything– chemicals are natural because they are made from things found in nature, poisons included. “Organic” has very specific definition about how things are grown and processed and does not allow “harmful” chemicals.

Organic products refers to items that are produced, manufactured and handled using organic means defined by certifying bodies such as the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) under its Organic Food Products Act. Natural products on the other hand, generally refers to items that are not altered chemically or synthesized in any form. These are derived from plants and animals. Thus a natural food item is not necessarily organic and vice versa.

anything can be called natural, certified organic products have to be 100% organic, to get the USDA stamp. check out whole foods market stores, they carry several great brands of organic skin care, and cosmetics.

There really is no such thing as organic makeup, because nearly all color is derived using minerals. Furthermore, makeup ingredients require a ton of processing in order to adhere to the skin and “perform” the way we expect them to.
With skin and hair care, ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ are easier to define (although still not foolproof). Certified organic skincare is what others said above: made with over 95% (or more) certified organic ingredients.
Products that are not certified organic, however, are not necessarily full of synthetics. Organic vs. natural vs. synthetic beauty product ingredients are like organic vs. conventional vs. plastic grapes. Or, if you prefer, grape-flavored kool-aid. Natural ingredients can describe minimally processed plant extracts that were grown on conventional (vs. organic) farms, or ingredients sourced from forests or other areas that cannot be certified organic. They often describe ingredients that were derived from natural ingredients like coconut, but have gone through quite a bit of processing in a lab to make them foam, prevent them from spoiling, and so forth.
And then, of course, there are products called natural and are anything but. The best way to know you’re not getting synthetically loaded beauty products masquerading as natural is to look for certifications such as BDIH. That is the best standard we currently have for natural products that are not certifiable organic.
