Want to tame your appetite with a low-cal, low-fat, and highly nutritious veggie? Smack on jicama (pronounced HICK-a-ma). Jicama can remove the craving out of your appetite because it is jampacked full of fiber – a plant substance that helps you feel full longer. One medium-sized tuber has a whopping 32 grams of the stuff!
Jicama belongs to the legume or bean family (Fabaceae), a cousin of the sweet potato, this underground tuber comes in two types: agua (watery juice) and leche (milky juice). Just like the hot pretzels on the sidewalks of New York, jicama is a street food, sold with a squeeze of lime and a shake of fiery chili powder.
It is a favorite dietary essential in Latin America and are widely grown in Mexico and Central America. There are numerous names for Jicama including: the Mexican potato, Mexican yam bean, ahipa, saa got, Chinese turnip, lo bok, and the Chinese potato.
