Surprisingly enough, nature was designed to give us some clues. A lot of fruits and vegetables are color coded to help distinguish the types of nutrients found within them. By eating more “colorful” meals, we can best accomplish a balanced consumption of healthful nutrient and have better health.

Most of these colors come from antioxidants. These molecules have been shown to provide cancer fighting agent to the body as well as to potentially reverse some of the biological markers of aging when consumed regularly in appropriate amounts from quality sources. Lycopene has shown to protect the DNA from free-radical attacks which reduces mutation and incidence of cancerous cell development.

The antioxidant Lycopene provides a red color to some fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes. When the tomato is vine-ripened the color of the meat is a very deep red indicating higher levels of Lycopene.

An orange color indicates the presence of carotins which are converted to Vitamin A inside the body. Studies have shown that while chemically isolated Vitamin A supplements may exhibit liver toxicity at very low levels, carotins derived from food have been shown to be safe even at very high dosages. Carrots are an excellent source of carotins, just remember that cooking damages this antioxidant, therefore raw, or lightly cooked carrots are best for optimal nutritional value.

Yellow is the color of Lutein and Quercitin. These nutrients are good for clear vision and healthiness of the retina and have also been found to have anti-inflammatory properties. They are found in corn, sweet peppers, apples and pears, but are also found in many green, leafy vegetables like cabbage and spinach.

Antocyanines are found in foods influenced by the purple color. These antioxidants are significant for good blood circulation and health of the retina. Many berries are rich with this antioxidant and once again they should be eaten raw for the best nutritional benefit

Lastly a reddish color comes from foods containing the antioxidant Beta Cyanine. An excellent source comes from the beet and has an anti-anemic benefit may potentially treat those suffering from iron-deficiency anemia.

Adding more color meals to your diet can provide better health benefits as well as create a more interesting menu. Colorful meals are more attractive which is probably what inspired our ancestors to add these foods to their diets in the first place. Add color to your meals for better healthy dieting and more energy!

One of the main reasons people buy organic food is that organic varieties are considered healthier and more natural. However organic food is often a lot more expensive than the regular options. As times are tough you are probably wondering where you can cut some pennies without it effecting your health. What you might not know is that some foods are more resilient than others and therefore don’t absorb as many of the chemicals that people have issues with. There are plenty of places to buy organic food from including an organic food wholesaler. But knowing which foods matter also means understanding why they don’t absorb chemicals.

The main difference that you will find between different foods ability to absorb chemicals is down to thickness or surface area. As an example, Banana’s or Onions have an outer layer or casing that gets peeled off, therefore there are less likely to be any chemicals in the part you are eating. Foods with thinner skins or an outer casing that you eat run the risk of passing these chemicals on to you.

As a guide here are a list of foods which are worth buying organic, this is due to their thinner outer skins and the chance they may absorb more chemicals.

Sweet Bell Peppers
Peaches
Apples
Celery
Nectarines
Strawberries
Spinach
Lettuce
Cherries
Pears
Grapes (Imported)
Potatoes

The following foods have a tougher outer skin and therefore are less likely to contain any chemicals;

Pineapples
Mango
Avocado
Sweet Corn (Frozen)
Asparagus
Sweet Peas (Frozen)
Kiwi Fruit
Oranges and Citrus fruits (if eating the fruit and not the skin)
Bananas
Cabbage
Broccoli

Affordable Ways To Increase Eco Friendliness Of A Home

Discover the Rewards of Making Energy Efficient Choices

Making green improvements to your home can have a positive impact not only on the future of our environment, but also on your family’s health and well-being. If one is willing to spend a little time thinking ahead, planning, prioritizing and budgeting for the environmentally friendly changes one chooses to make, both your home and your family will benefit in the long run. Some of these changes can be quiet affordable, while others require an initial investment which is recouped through energy savings over time. Being a good global citizen can be both affordable and fun.

Lighting

Changing to compact fluorescent light bulbs will quickly add up to significant savings for any homeowner. Replacing a single 75-watt incandescent bulb in your home today with a 25-watt CFL will add up to a savings of about $80 over the life of the bulb. The difference between the two bulbs is that CFLs convert most of their energy into light rather than heat.

Cost: CFLs generally cost less than $5.

Security

Many homeowners use security systems throughout their homes. Green security systems are quickly becoming available. For example, Vivint is a home security solutions company offering a green home security system. For homeowners with solar panels, they offer an energy efficient smart home security system. It allows homeowners to program appliances and monitor electricity usage from their smart phone.

Cost: After the initial cost for solar panels, Vivint charges a one-time $99 set up fee and monthly maintenance is under $50.

Recycle Electronics

Electronics disposal in the United States is a looming problem. Using local recycling facilities for electronics is one option. Another is reselling your electronic devices. It is estimated each American household has three cell phones languishing somewhere in the home. Each of these can be sold to organizations like green phone.com, where they are be refurbished and resold.

Cost: Selling your used electronics can net you anywhere from five dollars to hundreds.

Leaky Plumbing

A leaky faucet can waste over 70 gallons of water per day, while a leaking toilet can waste up to 200 gallons. Repairing a leaking toilet will save a homeowner about $30 per year and will save about 70,000 gallons of fresh water.

Cost: Replacing washers on faucets can cost less than a dollar. Simple toilet repair usually runs under $10, while a plumber’s visit could be closer to $100.

Green Appliances

At first, upgrading appliances sounds overwhelming. Prioritizing which appliances are real energy hogs can help make the decision easier. Usually, the first appliance to consider is the refrigerator. Appliances utilize approximately 18% of the homes annual energy bill but the fridge uses more energy than other appliances. Refrigerators older than 10 years should be replaced with energy-efficient models for a 10% to 50% savings on energy consumption. Changing to greener appliances can be done one appliance at a time.

Cost: New appliances will vary. Watch for sales and compare prices online.

Every homeowner can take simple cost-effective steps towards green home ownership. Every step has an impact on the environment and the health of others, including those we love. It helps to bear in mind that going green doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing proposition. Small steps add up quickly and results become evident after just a short time.

Weight Loss Misconceptions

January 23, 2012 by

It’s important to find a diet that works for you

You should avoid the word “diet” when referring to your weight loss program. Why? Because by definition the word diet means the act of restricting your appetite to certain foods in order to lose weight. Although in the beginning of your weight loss program and at the peak of motivation you may be able to deprive yourself of certain foods, your willingness to do so will start to wane. This is why the word “fad” is applied to so many of the popular dieting plans that have come and gone over the years; think all carb, atkin, juice, slimfast etc…

Remedy: Think portions and substitution. Instead of eliminating all foods you love add more healthful ones into your diet. Sweet potato fries for regular russet is a great example.

Breakfast is key

Untrue. Have you ever heard the saying, eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper? Many of us have lived and died by this rule due to the myth that having a big breakfast jumps starts our metabolism for the whole day. As if when you skip eating in the morning everything else you eat after just won’t digest properly! What? I don’t know who thought of that one but this simply isn’t true. The worst thing that you could be doing at any time of the day is eat when you aren’t hungry.

Remedy: You don’t want to defy this myth just for the sake of it. Make sure that you eat something around the time you wake up, but when that is should only be determined by when you’re hungry. If you don’t by the time it gets to mid-afternoon you’ll be starving and overeat, something you want to avoid.

If it is low-fat or non-fat it’s good for you

There is a reason why nutrition labels are mandated to be on the back of food stuff; it’s because the fronts can be deceiving. Many “fat free” or “non-fat” products have just as many calories as their full fat counterparts and just as many sugars.

Remedy: Always keep in mind the back nutrition label and also be mindful of what it is you’re actually looking for. Remember what we said about substitution and portion size? If you aren’t taking out a poor food choice in the place of an organic/low-fat product than all you’re doing is adding in more food.

Eating after 7 p.m. will make you fat

A calorie is a calorie is a calorie. No matter what time of day you are eating you are still consuming the same thing. So having a big mac at 8 o’clock at night would be just as detrimental to your weight loss plan as it would if you had it in the afternoon. The only difference here is that you may go to bed with a tummy ache.

Remedy: Instead of thinking about when you are eating, think about what you are eating and how much. These are really the only important things. Make sure that you are sticking to the right portions and the right healthful foods.

Real results come from hitting the gym, HARD

Although you should look at your weight-loss program as a dual effort between what you put in your body and how much you work that body out, it is not necessary to give your life away to the gym. Successful weight loss plans can center entirely on fitness routines devoted to walking. You just have to make sure that you are keeping the right balance between the two. The danger is avoiding working out completely and consuming too few calories.

Remedy: Buy a pedometer and walk everywhere that you go. 10,000 steps a day equal 2 and-half miles of walking and 250 calories, think about it!

Nowadays many have become in general a couch potato, inactive, over weight and flabby society. Whether you’re trying to lose weight or live a physical healthy life style, nutrition and exercise are essential to your wellness.

There are so much processed food with little nutrition value, that we carry the weights and become ever slow movers.

In nature, animals that eat the raw greens, grasses fruits and berries are very healthy animals. The meat-eating animals consume the healthy plant-eating animals and remain virtually disease free. We should eat raw fruits and vegetables and we should do so on a daily basis.

Today we have more machines to do most of the work for us. These are both good and bad. The good is a higher rate of production, bad because we are slowing down physically.

Take your first step to become healthy and fit now. Changing your diet to eating healthy nutritional foods is a good way to start. It’ll not only help you lose weight and help you feel better, but it will enhance your quality of life. You’ll have more energy and life just feels better when you are healthy.

By cutting down to smaller portions can help enormously. Consume less food at one sitting, drink water before you eat and then drink more water with your meal. Water takes up a lot of space in your stomach so you will feel full faster and water won’t give you any extra calories.

Drink lots of clean pure water. Your body needs it. Water help flush away toxins, gets your bowels moving.

Eat plenty of raw fruits and vegetables, peculiarly dark green varieties. Cooked vegetables lose some of their nutrients so eating a salad instead. Most of your vitamins and minerals come from fresh fruits and leafy green vegetables. And try to stick to organic to avoid the pesticides and chemicals.

Fiber keep the bowels moving and the combination of water and fiber will do magic. The best fiber comes from fruit and whole grains. You would need to eat 10 bran muffins to get the same amount of fiber as in a half cup of raspberries.

The best source of protein is from meats such as beef, chicken or turkey. But do limit the amount you eat at one time. You don’t need a 10 or 12oz piece of meat at one sitting. You can get protein from dairy and cheese but consume only small amounts because they digest too slowly. Nut is a source of protein but they are high in fat so consume small amounts.

Sweet treats, sodas, junk foods and many processed foods are high in sugar. Nothing gives you weight gain and that sluggish feeling then from foods that are high in sugar.

Come up with an exercise program that you like and stick to. Any exercise program will help you lose weight if you stick with it.

Following your program is of import. It takes time and you will be able to experience weight loss in the beginning when it seems it is not going fast enough, but if you stick with it, you will reach your goal and have more energy.

And finally, getting your vitamins and minerals from food is the best but that is hard to do these days so find a qualified nutritionist to help you in selecting some good supplements to assisting in getting your daily requirements.
