I Would Love A Shift In Energy, But What Happens To Carbon Dioxide Pumped Under The Earth?

I just read an article about greener energy and loosing less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, but the article said that the carbon dioxide is pumped under ground. What ultimately happens to it? I know how carbon credits are used but I noticed that some companies claim that they “buy green energy credits” as though it’s a positive thing. Don’t companies want to advertise that they sell credits because they don’t use all theirs up?
