How to Help Your Digestion Naturally
When it comes to your stomach and bowels there are a lot of misconceptions. People think that they can eat and drink whatever they want and their stomach can just handle it. However as you get older you will find that your digestive tract becomes more sensitive to changes in your diet and overall health. Even those with allergies find that the digestive tract is very easy to upset. Here are some helpful tips for keeping your digestive tract on track naturally:
1. Test for allergies – Your fist step when you are having chronic or ongoing digestive system issues is to check for allergies. Many allergies like lactose intolerance can cause huge problems in your digestion. Other issues like Crohn’s disease or irritable bowel syndrome can cause immense discomfort and should be treated with medication, diet changes or both. One you know the problem you are on the first step to fixing it. If your checkouts come through without a hitch, then you may need to change your lifestyle habits.
2. Drink lots of water – The first change you can do to improve your digestion, no matter what issue you have, is to drink more water. Water helps keep your bowels moving and your urine clear. It helps to prevent backups and constipation, urinary tract infections, and also promotes the digestion of food. Drink water before, after and during every meal.
3. Avoid stimulants – As part of drinking more water you should also be avoiding stimulants like caffeine. Caffeine can irritate the stomach and cause the openings in your stomach and bowels to spasm. If you have acid reflux avoiding caffeine could bring you immense relief. Smoking and drinking alcohol should also be avoided as they can cause irritations also. Although a glass of wine is known to be soothing, over indulgence leads to a host of digestive issues.
4. Take a probiotic – The bacteria in your colon play an important role in your digestion. Often we take antibiotics that kill off huge numbers of these beneficial bacteria. Replace them with a probiotic supplement. You can also eat yogurt to get the same bacterial benefits. Enzymes that aid digestion, such as Beano, are another natural way to treat gastric issues.
5. Move more – Last but not least you should increase your physical activity level. The more you move your body the better it is for your digestion. Taking a walk before meals is a great way to prepare your body to digest. You can also make sure your digestion is on par by not lying down after eating for at least an hour. That will give your body a chance to digest your food before you go to sleep. Even twenty minutes of light exercise can make a huge difference in your overall health and your digestion in particular. Make exercise a part of your daily routine!
Improving your digestion does not mean that you have to pop lots of pills or go through massive medical procedures. Often times we can simply change our diets and lifestyles to live a healthier and more pleasurable life.

5 Great Activities for May Day
May Day is celebrated throughout the world. In some regions it is a joyous spring festival, while in others it is an acknowledgement of the 19th century struggle that ordinary workers participated in to improve conditions in their places of labor.
Other organizations use May Day as a time to undertake special projects. For example, Heritage Preservation encourages museums, libraries, archives, historical societies, and members of the public to prepare for emergency situations.
However, May Day is traditionally a time of joy, and there are all sorts of activities that you can do for May Day:
1. There are many fun activities, including word scramble, word searches, and putting words in alphabetical order, all relevant to the theme of May Day that you can make for free online.
2. Crafting is a great way to celebrate May Day. This is an activity that both adults and children can get involved in. You can make simple garlands made of paper or real flowers, a flower cone, or decorate a May Day hoop with ribbons and bells. On May Day use the items you have made:
Give a cardboard basket or cone filled with fresh flowers as a surprise present to your neighbor. Traditionally the item is placed on your neighbor’s porch or hung from her doorknob without her seeing who put it there!
Involve the whole family or neighborhood in a game of rolling hoops – another May Day tradition.
Play a game of Nine Men’s Morris. This is a board game for two players, and it was often played in Olde England on May Day.
3. May Day parades are very popular throughout the world. Find a parade near your school and either go to watch it or take part! There are often floats highlighting the theme of flowers, and large puppets and other fun figures. Celebrating May Day is often associated with dancing, and at the end of the parade there may be a Maypole that has been decorated with ribbons, flowers, and balloons.
4. Eating is a great way to highlight the fun of May Day. Have a special breakfast at home, or host a lunch or BBQ and invite friends and family. You can have a flower theme, and even ask people to wear costumes if you want to! Traditional foods for May Day include bannock cakes and fritters.
5. Whether you’re going to commemorate May Day by remembering those who went before you in the work place or by joyously welcoming the spring season, don’t forget those less fortunate than yourselves. A good way to celebrate May Day is to take up a collection, either of money or good second hand clothes, and give them to a charity in your area.
May Day is a day of fun, and to know that people around the world are marking the day in their own way, according to their culture and beliefs, makes it all the more special.

5 Foods to Keep You Fuller For Longer
While it may sound like a diet gimmick – foods that make you feel full longer actually do exist. Note that such foods still have calories but they can ensure you that you will not want for more food for many hours. For instance, a half cup of salted peanuts contain 438 calories while the same amount of raw broccoli only has 15 calories. Eating broccoli means you will feel fuller while you may have to eat more peanuts in order to fell satiated.
Foods to make you feel full are those that have lots of dietary fiber and water. These often contain less calories and are mainly divided into two food types – foods that curb cravings and those that steady blood sugar. Would you want a taste of these foods now? Here is a list of some of them –
An Apple a Day
Apples are rich in pectin, a soluble fiber that provides bulk as it digests slowly. If you want a low calorie diet, then adding apples into your menu is a wise move. Don’t just get to keep the doctor away, keep those carbs at bay, too.
Grains and Their Complex Carbs
The low calorie food list should always include ragi, bajra, wheat and other whole grains. These contain complex carbohydrates that release glucose at a slower rate. Glucose helps maintain normal blood sugar levels, hence, it can help you fight off sugar cravings. Whole grain bread and pasta are rich sources of Vitamin B and fiber, both important factors in controlling metabolism.
Beans and Natural Appetite Suppression
Beans and lentils are all rich in cholecystokinin, a digestive hormone that naturally curbs your appetite. Researches have proven that these foods also maintain the body’s blood sugar levels, hence, you feel full longer. Apart from keeping hunger at bay, beans and lentils are also effective in lowering your cholesterol levels so it is much like hitting two birds with one stone.
One other food with natural suppressant is the coconut oil.
Sweet Potatoes and Weight Loss
You may want to say bye-bye to bagels for breakfast. Instead, opt for the healthier alternative which is the sweet potato; it is low in calories and high in fiber. Its water content is also high which can help you lose weight as water takes a lot of room in your tummy.
Herbal Teas as an Alternative Snacks
Instead of getting filled with sugary foods such as cookies or a slice of cake, or downing sodas or juices, why not drink a glass of tea?
Herbal teas can effectively suppress one’s appetite while also increasing the body’s metabolism. Look for black or green tea such as Ma Huang, Kola Nut or Guarana. These are naturally caffeinated which can increase energy levels and metabolic rates.
Know that losing weight may be hard but is achievable. All you need is a little motivation here and some amount of discipline and you should be good. Eat these nutritious foods and you should see a fitter and healthier you in just a few weeks.

Five Ways to Involve Your Kids in Sports
If you’re a sports lover, more than likely you’d like to pass that love onto your kids. Depending on where your child’s interests and natural abilities lie, there are several ways to pass on an interest, including the following five.
1. Teach them About Sports Icons
If your child likes history or numbers, teaching your children about your favorite sports heroes can be a good way to introduce them to the world of sports. Get your child a book about Michael Jordan or show them a video on YouTube about them. If your child likes numbers, having your child help you keep track of stats for your favorite player may also peak their interest. Talk with your child about what makes a certain player great and why you look up to them. More than likely they will start to look up to them too.
2. Follow a Favorite Team through the Season
Team loyalty is often a driving force for enjoying a sport. Introduce your kids to your favorite team and make it their favorite team, by going to games together, having parties, watching from home and cheering loud. If your favorite team is from your university, talk to your kids about the other great things your university does. Teach them the favorite cheer and let them paint their face. Many sports memories come from remembering what you did during the game just as much as the result of the game.
3. Play the Sport Together
If you love to play the game, taking your child outside and teaching them to play not only teaches the game but makes a great bonding moment. Teach them the basics of the game and then have pickup games with them in the evening and on the weekends. Encourage your kids to play with their friends as well.
4. Join a Team
Whether you start them when they’re young in a city league or wait until they can join a team at school, support your child in the sport they decide to join. Playing the game, making friends and the competition can spur a love for the game that can last a lifetime. Sometimes when someone starts to play a sport they become more interested in watching other games, learning about players and learning about other sports as well.
5. Teach them Strategy
Part of enjoying a sport is understanding the plays, strategy and calls coaches make to help teams win a game. Teach your kids about the various strategies used by the sports you enjoy, so they can see them while they are watching or playing the game. Soon, they will be yelling at the screen right along with you.

Rising Popularity of Alternative Medicine – Good or Bad?
It’s important to get one thing clear before I start talking about alternative medicine or treatments. It’s my opinion, that nobody should cast aside the advice of a qualified doctor for any condition on the word of a modern day equivalent of a snake oil salesman. Despite the obvious dangers to anyone who has a serious condition, it is foolhardy to dismiss any form of treatment without giving it due consideration, traditional, alternative or whatever.
Why use Alternative Medicine?
Two of the most popular reasons for using alternative medicine or treatments are:
1. Everything else has failed.
2. Some, but not all, alternative medicine can be less harmful.
Many medicines have adverse effects and one of the most important things to realise is what the messages on the packets of medicines actually mean. Side effects are not something that can happen to someone in the same sense as someone ‘might’ win the lottery; side effects are simply ‘effects’. Okay, so the side effects may not be as noticeable or powerful as the primary effects of medicines, but they are effects that exist.
The Alternatives to your Doctor
These days, your doctor is much more likely to prescribe a change to a healthier lifestyle that includes more exercise and better diets. In the UK, there are moves to encourage doctors to reduce the number of patients who return to their surgery and lower spends on drugs for treatment. The better the reduction of recurring patients, the better the bonus from the National Health Service.
The sight of a doctor with a needle is likely to put most people on the table, that’s why many ailments remain unreported. Many people who suffer in silence would be much better off or more willing to visit a doctor If they thought they would be treated without drugs. Obviously, there are some cases that absoolutely require medication, but many of our more popular problems are easily avoidable with a little lifestyle alteration. That unfortunately, is easier said than done for many people.
Problems with Lifestyle Change
Most of us end up in a bad situation because we plan to right? Obviously not, but if it was that simple, we would all changes our lifestyle to live more healthily. One of the problems we have is that everything we do revolves around convenience. Even the exercise equipment we use is designed to give maximum return for the minimum effort, that’s why there are so many infomercials selling new fad equipment through the night on channels you rarely watch.
Are those exercise machines bad? Not at all, but they highlight the fact that most of us really don’t want to eat well and workout often. That doesn’t mean we can’t with the correct help, but that doesn’t mean a drill sergeant should be on-hand to scream every time we slack off a little. Some people just need to adjust the way they think and behave, but until the self-destructive processes are highlighted, it’s hard to recognise the things that are holding us back. It’s never just one thing, that’s why it’s called a lifestyle change and not a Thursdays after watching ‘Days of Our Lives’ change.
The Most Popular Problem Treatable without Drugs
Obesity is something that affects more and more people every year and many countries in the western world are experiencing growing numbers of people who are overweight. Obesity is also a major cause of many health problems that directly relate to an unhealthy lifestyle. Few things, apart from diet and exercise will help someone lose weight, but many of us find it hard to stick to a healthy routine and this is a psychological problem and no pills exist to solve this issue.
Will Life Coaching Work for Healthier Living?
Not many people grasp the idea of life coaching and if I’m honest, I’m a sceptic too. I don’t think I need someone to tell me how to act or feel, I have a wife for that and she seems pretty keen to hold on to her position as ‘boss of me’, but some life coaches must have a degree of success otherwise we wouldn’t see them writing on decent publications like the Huffington Post.
I read the post on Huffington just out of curiosity and I can relate to some of the stuff written, but most I thought was drivel or fluff. If I want to know a few sayings that grans and parents used to quote, I only have to think about my childhood. I don’t need to pay someone for the pleasure of lecturing me on home values and I’m reasonably sure it would result in chastisement from the ‘boss of me’. I’m not saying nobody would benefit from a little life coaching; it’s just not for everyone.
Hypnotherapy as an Alternative Treatment
Hypnotherapy has a surprising number of well-known evangelists and it may be the new Prozac for the discerning depressive. Many high-profile individuals, like UK TV show Strictly Come Dancing’s Camilla Dallerup have used hypnotherapy to get over their problems and this is working wonders for the industry. In fairness, it was through her life coach that Camilla had the hypnotherapy, so life coaches are obviously not just about telling you to ‘look before you leap’ or something similar.
So broken hearts are on the list of problems treatable by hypnotherapy and it’s probably going to be less addictive than Prozac, but there are many more problems being treated regularly. The good thing is that some people can treat themselves with self-hypnosis and although I haven’t tried it myself, it has to be worth a go if you are having anxiety issues or trouble sleeping. The Daborn Group have some free downloads that are worth a look if you don’t want to spend lots of money.
The Bottom Line
There is no replacement for common sense and that means you need to use your head when deciding the best course of treatment. Often, the best treatment is conventional medicine, but it’s always worth asking your doctor to recommend an alternative treatment if you don’t want to depend on drugs

Pap Smears And Cervical Cancer
Cervical cancer is a silent killer of women, often being discovered in the very late stages when treatment is no longer an option. With around 300,000 women dying worldwide every year from this disease, it’s clear that the importance of regular pap smears as a way of detecting early changes in the cervix and preventing the development of cancer is vitally important.
What are Pap smears?
A Pap smear is a minimally invasive test that involves a health professional gaining access to the cervix via a speculum (Latin for “mirror”). Once the cervix is visualised, a special brush is used to take a sample of the cells of the cervix. These cervix cells are sent to a laboratory and analysed under a microscope to look for any abnormal changes that may indicate the potential for cancerous growth. If abnormal cells are detected, there are a number of different treatment options that can prevent the development of these cells into cancer.
A nurse, doctor or women’s health worker can perform the test, so there are a variety of qualified health professionals available for you to choose from. It’s important to feel absolutely comfortable with your practitioner, so having a regular health professional you can discuss any issues with is strongly advised.
Why should you have one?
Cervical cancer is principally caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is spread easily via sexual intercourse. The risk of cervical cancer also increases if you are a cigarette smoker or have a poor diet. The Australian government recommends that from the age of 18, all women who have been sexually active should have a Pap smear every two years.
If you have received the cervical cancer vaccine, you still need to continue having Pap smears every two years. The cervical cancer vaccine does lower your risk for developing cervical cancer, but does not eradicate it completely.
Women should continue to have Pap smears every two years until the age of 70, at which time it’s important to discuss with your general practitioner how frequently you should continue to be screened.
Signs and symptoms of cervical cancer
It’s important to note the signs and symptoms of cervical cancer, which include abnormal vaginal bleeding, bleeding after sexual intercourse, lower abdominal pain and pain during sexual intercourse. If you experience one or many of these symptoms, it’s essential you seek medical assistance from your general practitioner immediately.

Detoxification And Cleansing For Better Health
Detoxification (detox) is among the much widely exploited treatments in unconventional medicine. It’s founded on the principle that sicknesses can be induced by the accumulation of toxic matters (toxins) in the body. Getting rid of existent toxins and warding off new toxins are crucial pieces of the healing process.
When we discuss detoxification and cleansing our body of harmful toxins, is the physical or medicative removal of toxic matters from the human body and can also refer to the period of withdrawal after long-term use of an addictive substance.
Individual don’t like to think of harmful toxins building up in their colons or in their arterias, but this is often a by-product of a meat-eating diet. A diet that is richly high in fat and refined foods that slow down our digestive systems, and interrupt our excretion processes as well.
This can permit harmful bacteria and toxins to cumulate and can create sluggishness, and a host of other digestive disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome or colitis. Once we start consuming a more healthy vegetarian diet, we start to get more dietetic fiber into our systems, and suddenly, our digestive systems begin to work better,
When you do away with high-fat meat and processed foods from your dieting, then your body will not work as hard in digesting these foods. Everything gets clearer – your blood, your organs, your mind. You are more aware of the toxic nature of the food you had been eating before.
Toxicity is of greater concern today than before. A study by the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, in collaboration with the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and Commonweal discovered an average of 91 industrial compounds, pollutants, and other chemicals in the blood and urine of only nine volunteers from five different cities, with a total of 167 chemicals found in the group.
There are many new and more powerful chemicals, air and water pollution, radiation and nuclear power. We ingest new chemicals, use more drugs, consume more sugar and processed foods, and abuse ourselves with assorted stimulants and sedatives every day. Many toxicity diseases has increased as well. Cancer and cardiovascular disease are two of the main ones. Arthritis, allergies, obesity, and many skin problems are others. Additionally, other symptoms, such as headaches, fatigue, pains, coughs, gastrointestinal problems, and problems from immune weakness, can all be related to toxicity.
Natural detox programs can be an effective way to support overall health, but whether the goal is to eliminate toxins, flush away excess fat, or simply to live healthier, it’s important to know the difference between what is healthy and supportive, and what is potentially harmful and counterproductive.
Detoxification and cleansing are not a miracle cure for whatever ails you, and that being healthy means making a lifelong commitment to wellness. When you start a vegetarian eating plan, your body eventually cleanses itself of the harmful effects of these toxic foods.
Using Vegetarian Protein Sources to Build Muscle
Protein, protein, protein. When it comes to giving your body the fuel it needs to build strong muscles and increase mass, it’s all about protein. When we picture protein, images of eggs, chicken, turkey, beef and dairy might gallop through our brains. And let us not forget the almighty protein shakes consumed before we all go to the gym to work our muscles, hoping to recreate the firm, toned physique of Brad Pitt in “Fight Club.” (Yes, even the girls.)
But what about vegetarians? We’ve always been taught that protein comes primarily from animal sources, so can enough be found in a vegetarian diet to get the dietary building blocks needed to build muscle mass? And how do vegans get protein? How does someone who eats no animal products whatsoever—no meat, no dairy, no eggs—get the protein they need for strength training at the gym? I think the answer will surprise you.
It certainly surprised me. Because guess what? It turns out that many vegetables have a shockingly high percentage of protein. As in, not only enough protein for the average human to stay completely healthy, but enough protein for a highly active human engaging in strength training exercises to build muscle. There are even vegetarian and vegan professional athletes, including vegan American bodybuilder Robert Cheeke, President and Founder of Vegan Bodybuilding & Fitness.
It is generally recommended that vegetarians and vegans turn to plant-based foods such as legumes, nuts, soy, seeds and grains to give their bodies the daily protein necessary for good health. These foods are wonderful sources of many essential amino acids, vitamins, minerals, as well as the Omega-3s found in flaxseeds known to help lower cholesterol levels and reduce inflammation. But researchers are figuring out that in addition to these great non-animal-based sources, vegans and vegetarians can actually get the protein they need in the form of vegetables. Yes, vegetables.
For example, spinach is 49% protein, which is pretty impressive when you consider that beef is only 25.8% protein. Spinach is also naturally cholesterol-free and loaded with iron, calcium, folic acid, vitamin K and vitamin C. Kale shares many of the same nutritional benefits of spinach, all while being 45% protein. With this in mind, a vegan or vegetarian might increase the protein levels of their pre-workout soy protein shake by tossing in a few handfuls of spinach and kale, or might be able to skip the protein powder altogether.
Broccoli, long touted as a nutrient dense, cancer-fighting superfood, also has a shocking amount of protein, coming in at 45%. This is especially amazing considering that chicken, one of the most popular sources of lean protein for body and health-conscious people is only 23% protein (according to thegiveproject.com). Other high in protein vegetables are cauliflower (40% protein), mushrooms (38% protein) and parsley (34% protein).
Maybe you’ve decided to eat vegetarian for health reasons, like lowering your cholesterol, or maybe you’re trying to cut out heavy animal products to detoxify and cleanse your system. No matter what your motivation for skipping the animal products may be, “muscular vegetarian” doesn’t have to be an oxymoron. There is no reason you can’t continue to give your body the protein it needs to power a great workout and build solid muscle. Just do what your mom always told you to do… and eat your vegetables.

Benefits of Acupuncture
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese science that teaches the relationship between the body and its energy flow or Qi, which, when manipulated can help the body heal itself. Acupuncturists use needles, electrical stimulation or heat at acupuncture points to help improve the body’s overall functioning. Modern scientists believe that acupuncture stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals into the spine, brain, and muscles, which triggers a release of hormones that helps the body regulate its internal systems. The steady increase of patrons for acupuncture has given this science recognition worldwide.
Pain Management
Acupuncture has been used widely as a form of pain management. It can be used to treat both chronic and complex pain. Constant recurring pain can mar the quality of life. Acupuncture can treat this pain using techniques designed to enhance the energy flow in the body. Studies published in the Archives of Internal Medicine have shown that patients have seen up to a 15% reduction in pain after an acupuncture session.
Pregnancy woes
Besides pain management, acupuncture has proven effective in improving the symptoms felt during pregnancy. Many women complain of heart burn and digestive problems as a common side effect during pregnancy.
A study conducted by Brazilian researchers showed that 75 percent of women who underwent regular acupuncture sessions during their pregnancy experienced a refreshing change in their heartburn and indigestion symptoms. This led to a decline in pain and the use of antacid medication.
Medical Acupuncture
Acupuncture has been used to treat symptoms of patients undergoing Chemotherapy and radiation. Patients who wore acupuncture bands during treatment saw a decreased feeling of nausea, a known side effect of chemotherapy. Acupuncture can also improve the quality of life of cancer patients, by offering effective pain and behavior management solutions. Acupuncture is also used to manage symptoms of post surgery cases, across specialties.
The use of acupuncture has also been known to increase the effectiveness of drugs prescribed for depression, where the patients’ drug intake can be halved, while maintaining the same desired behavior, if supplemented with regular acupuncture sessions.
Weight Issues
Although acupuncture is mainly associated with pain management, it can also be used to improve overall wellness and healing of the body. Scientists in Korea have analyzed studies involving over 3000 participants and have found that acupuncture has shown positive, short term effects on obesity. Studies are inconclusive about long terms effects of acupuncture on obesity, but a healthy routine with a few acupuncture sessions is bound to improve overall wellness.
