Banning Soda Machines In Schools
Banning Soda Machines in Schools Doesn’t Stop Sugar Intake
To remove or not remove soda machines from schools has been a debate for years. 24 states now have laws banning soda or sugary drinks from being sold in schools. But a new study has found that prohibiting soda machines in schools is not the best way to reduce students sugary drink intake. Even if the machines are removed, students still drink sugar loaded juice, energy or sports drinks.
Whether there was a policy against sugary drinks at schools or not, 85 percent of students still drank them weekly, according to the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.
The average 20 ounce soda contains 16 teaspoons of sugar. The limit of added sugar intake should not exceed 4.5 teaspoons a day for teens, according to the American Heart Association. Most teens eat 34 teaspoons of sugar a day.
Even if the school environment has healthier options, children are in the habit of drinking sugary beverages outside of school from watching what their parents or friends drink. If you have children, but enjoy drinking sodas, Starbucks coffee loaded with flavored syrups, or even energy drinks, keep in mind that your children are watching.
Remind yourself, and tell your children some of these harmful effects of a high soda or sugary drink diet:
* The phosphoric and citric acid found in soda wears down your teeth’s enamel and makes your teeth more prone to tooth decay, plaque and tartar.
* The phosphoric acid in sodas is also linked to kidney stones and other renal issues.
* Soda can take calcium from your bones because of the high levels of phosphorous, which can contribute to osteoporosis, and children breaking bones more easily.
* Researchers calculate for each soda consumed the obesity risk increases 1.6 times.
* Those who drink sodas or sugary drinks have a higher fatty acid content, which may cause heart disease or diabetes.
If you are concerned about your child’s health, avoid stocking sodas, or high-sugar content sports drinks, in the house and refrain ordering them in restaurants. Instead drink more water and even add some pizzazz to it by mixing in crushed raspberries, watermelon or fresh mint. Set a good example for your children and they will thank you when they’re your age.

Compare Solar Power To Traditional Energy

When we consider the many advantages of Solar Energy compared to traditional energy sources, the flexibility of setting up a photovoltaic system wherever the sun shines seems to be the biggest benefit. Freed from dependency upon a power grid, the installation will make solar power available to consumers in any location.
The Need For Renewable Energy Sources
With awareness of renewable resources on the increase, both domestic and industrial users have begun to take a fresh look at solar power. Once the initial costs have been met, and the users provided with a system, they can also benefit from government grants for grid-connected solar systems. Setup costs have also fallen over the past few years.
Energy In The Industrial World
In industrialised countries the majority of energy comes from coal, gas and nuclear energy, while solar power still accounts for less than 1% of total production. The costs of gas and coal extraction and their eventual contribution to pollution are of increasing concern, whereas solar energy remains clean, free and unlimited.
Solar Energy Set Up
The technical requirements for setting up a photovoltaic system are firstly a survey to see if your property is suitable for conversion, with a roof orientated towards the sun and strong support for the weight of the panels. Domestic solar systems produce between 2 and 5 kilowatts of energy which will be supplemented by the home’s grid supply if this is not sufficient. On a sunny day the output can exceed the consumption of the home and this excess wattage will be channeled back into the grid. The expense of setting up the system will soon be absorbed by its productive lifespan (typically 25-30 years).
Why You Should Consider Installing Solar Energy?
Owners will receive a Micro Generation Certificate Scheme to permit you to apply for rebates from the government, essentially to pay you back for any extra energy your system feeds back into the system. The disadvantages of solar power include its high initial setup costs, the lack of reliable generation in less sunny climates such as the UK, and the fact that it won’t generate at night. Traditional energy sources may keep the lights burning until the wee small hours, but solar power is the only source that pays its users to consume it.
Increased innovation and development have led to reduced installation costs for the consumer, and this technology also extends to solar water heating (which is also subject to the same limitations on daylight exposure as solar panels). Interested users should approach a reputable solar energy supplier for a survey. The Department of Energy & Climate Change can provide information on the financial incentives for users of solar energy. With solar power now providing a realistic alternative to traditional sources for consumers all over the world there are now greater options for access to solar energy – backed up by governments worldwide.

How To Protecting Children From The Sun

For our bodies to remain healthy, it is essential that a certain level of exposure to the sun be allowed. However, the potential health risk comes when the body becomes over exposed to harmful UV rays for prolonged periods of time, leading to long term skin damage.
The sun harms our bodies through the UV rays penetrating the skin resulting in long term damage to the cells. Often there is no indication that the skin is becoming burnt until that tingly sensation occurs to the area burnt. In severe cases sun burn is extremely painful and will last for many hours. If this occurs, the area affected should be covered from all sunlight until such time that the pain resides.
Most damage to the skin occurs when the temperature is not at its hottest, therefore tempting people to take fewer precautions.
One particular age group particularly susceptible to burning are small children. It is therefore vital for us to take as many precautions as possible in order to protect them to the best of our abilities.
There are many ways of reducing the risks of children becoming burnt, but two of the simplest methods are still the best and are;
· Wearing Sun Cream
· Staying in the Shade
Sun Cream
Although not advisable to leave young children in the sun for hours on end, wearing a high SPF factor sun cream will lengthen the amount of time that can be spent in the sun without the skin becoming over exposed. To properly protect children’s skin, the cream should be applied liberally to all exposed parts of the body paying particular attention to the tops of ears, nose and back of the neck. The cream should be rubbed in well and applied around 20minutes prior to exposure for optimum results.
To maintain greater levels of protection, sun cream should be reapplied every couple of hours and directly after swimming.
Staying in the Shade
Providing a shaded area in which to stay protected from the sun is a really effective way of allowing children the pleasures of playing outdoors without any risks of skin damage. Ideal ways of providing shade in the garden are through the use of sun awnings. At the touch of a button, this type of solar shading solution will create a large area of shade, under which children can play, paint or enjoy a meal.
Retractable awnings offer a versatile shading solution for protecting your children because when no shade is required, or when the weather is not great, they can be stored neatly in a cassette housing unit that is simply fixed to the wall (usually above a patio area, doorway or bright window)
Awnings vary in sizes, so anything from the largest patio awnings can be installed down to a small window awning that might be used to provide shade for a children`s bedroom window or nursery.
In addition to the shading benefits that retractable sun awnings offer, should there be a sudden onset of rain, the area beneath the awnings will remain dry as the water will simply run off the fabric of the sun awnings and run onto the adjacent ground.

6 Tips On Persuading Kids To Clean Their Rooms
Are you sick and tired of constantly reminding your kids to clean their rooms? It may seem to you that cleaning and kids do not go together. However, maybe all you need to do is to learn the art of persuading your kids to keep their private retreats spic and span. Here are a few tips that may help you persuade your kids to clean their rooms.
Start them young.
Don’t expect your kids to clean their rooms in a heartbeat if you never gave them the skills to do so at a young age. Toddlers and little children love to mess up their rooms. But they also like playing games. Turn tidying up their toys and other stuff into a game. Provide color coded bins for their toys, coloring materials, books and even their clothes. Play a sorting game or have a race. Before you know it, your little kids will be cleaning up after themselves.
Clean as a team.
Cleaning is often viewed as a sort of punishment. For your kids to see it otherwise, schedule cleaning days wherein everyone in the family will do their assigned chores together in one day. You can help your kids clean their rooms and in turn they can help you clean the areas you are responsible for.
Make cleaning fun.
Play some music while cleaning. This helps keep their minds alert and happy. Though avoid allowing them to have the TV on. Television is visual. The kids will tend to stop working and start watching if something on the boob tube piques their interest.
Come up with a schedule.
Cleaning can mean a lot of things. It can be making the bed, putting away clothes, vacuuming, dusting, or cleaning the cabinets, windows and drawers. Make sure your kids know exactly what you mean by “clean your room.” Better yet, make a schedule. Divide the cleaning chores into daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly events. This way they have a guide as to what is expected of them. A cleaning schedule helps keep them organized.
Never use cleaning as a punishment.
If you want to ground your kids, don’t tell them to go to their rooms and start cleaning. This is a surefire way to make your kids despise cleaning. Remember not to shout at them for not cleaning their rooms. Instead, speak in a firm tone but never raise your voice.
Don’t bribe them.
Giving them rewards will only backfire on you. When they do clean their rooms, verbal praise is enough. Thank them for a job well done.
Persuading your kids to clean their rooms is an art. You need to start them young and not make them feel like cleaning is a punishment. Instead, they should feel great about themselves if they are able to keep their rooms clean. Once they get into the habit, you may not need to remind them to clean their rooms anymore.
If you need help with cleaning than maybe it’s time for a maid. A simple people search will quickly get you in touch with any maids in your area so you can spend more time with your kids and less time cleaning.
Alternative Therapies For Active Lifestyles
It’s great to be busy. But today’s active lifestyles can lead to a variety of health issues, and drugs aren’t always the answer. If you have an ailment and you’re looking for alternative treatment options, maybe it’s time you tried essential oils. Used in eastern medicine for millennia, essential oils are gaining greater acceptance as their beneficial properties receive more recognition. In fact, essential oils are finding their way into many mainstream products, reformulated to trade on the therapeutic benefits of ingredients such as lavender and chamomile.
While they may lack the kinds of scientific studies used by Big Pharma to support the claims of patentable and more profitable products, the evidence – accumulated over thousands of years of usage – that essential oils are effective in treating a large number of health disorders is hard to ignore. On that note, here’s a look at 5 major health benefits of essential oils that all people, especially those on the go, can appreciate.
Mood enhancement and stress relief:
In light of the recent revelations regarding the ineffectiveness of prescription antidepressants, those who suffer from mild to moderate depression and accompanying anxiety may find relief through the use of various essential oils. Growing evidence suggests that oils such as lavender, jasmine, lemon, orange, and rose can elicit biochemical and psychological responses that promote relaxation, mood elevation, enhanced memory, calmness, clarity, and more restful sleep. Although these oils should not be considered as cure-alls, they can be used without worrying about negative side effects and the potential for physical and psychological dependence that are often associated with prescription drugs. For those who suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), – a form of depression brought on by a lack of sunlight during winter months – aromatherapy with essential oils has been shown to be fairly effective in relieving both depression and irritability.
Immune system support:
As bacterial resistance to antibiotics increases, and cold and flu viruses return each year with a vengeance, the ability of essential oils to boost our immune systems to ward off infections is a major benefit. Oils such as lemon, clove, chamomile, and mountain savory have been shown to trigger the immune system to increase the production of white blood cells, in particular the t-lymphocytes that help to fight off bacterial and viral pathogens.
In addition, some research suggests that certain components found in these oils can perform a role in fighting infection that is similar to human antibodies. And lemongrass oil shows promise in battling MRSA, a bacterial strain that has become resistant to many potent antibiotics. But the benefits don’t stop there. Other essential oils have also been shown to be effective against fungal and parasitic infections.
Relief of pain and inflammation:
Just as aspirin, the most powerful non-steroidal anti-inflammatory and analgesic is a drug of natural origin, essential oils have components capable of relieving both pain and inflammation through two unique mechanisms. Oils such as black pepper, peppermint, ginger, lavender, Palo Santo, and wintergreen are thought to boost the production of pain relieving endorphins and other bio-chemicals in the brain.
As for pain caused by inflammation, essential oils seem to suppress the inflammatory response at the cellular level. Wintergreen oil is the most potent anti-inflammatory, with 5 drops being approximately equal to 1 adult aspirin. Oregano has also been shown to be a potent anti-inflammatory, along with frankincense, which is favored by many for the treatment of pain and inflammation associated with arthritis.
Relief from insomnia:
There’s no getting around it. Despite the technological advances that were initially thought to make our lives easier, daily demands and stresses are as prevalent as ever. Add to that the daily aches and pains of acute and chronic illnesses, along with poor dietary habits, and you’ve got a recipe for insomnia, a condition said to affect some 65% of Americans. No wonder the use of prescription sleeping pills is steadily on the rise.
Unfortunately, drug induced sleep is not restful, and all those pills come with undesirable side-effects – including the potential for addiction. As mentioned briefly above, certain essential oils help promote relaxation that can lead to a restful and rejuvenating sleep. The most popular aromatic oil for sleep is lavender. Applied directly to feet, palms, and pillow cases just prior to lying down, lavender helps promote restful sleep by soothing aches and pains, relaxing tense muscles, reducing anxiety, and calming the mind.
Improved focus and concentration:
The increased demands of our busy lives have given rise to super coffees and energy drinks, laced with stimulants and marketed with the promise of promoting mental clarity and increased productivity. Unfortunately, the desire to gain that extra edge has led to the overuse of these kinds of products, which are not without side-effects such as nervousness, anxiety, and insomnia. Aromatherapy with essential oils such as eucalyptus, peppermint, lemon, lavender, frankincense, opaiba, and others has been shown to be effective in improving the ability to concentrate for short periods of time without untoward side effects.
As it is with other alternative therapies, the claims made for essential oil have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. Therefore, the products mentioned above are not intended to be used in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of any disease. If you have any health concerns seek proper medical treatment from your health care provider.

How To Treat Winter Allergies
Sometimes it seems like you spend half the winter time sniffling, sneezing and just feeling under the weather, pardon the pun. While cold weather has often been associated with getting sick more often than you tend to during the summer months, there are several different reasons why the winter time kicks up what are called winter allergies. These allergies aren’t the same thing as winter colds, even though the symptoms may be similar.
What are Winter Allergies?
Winter allergies are just like summer allergies. When an irritant of some kind gets into the air and you breathe it in, it bothers your mucus membranes, throat and other parts of your respiratory system. This causes your body to release histamine and makes you feel like things aren’t all right. The main difference between a winter allergy and a summer allergy is where you tend to experience them.
Winter allergies tend to be more prevalent in your home. Summer allergies tend to come from outside. While some people are allergic to the pollens that come out during the summer, other people are allergic to the dust particles and dead skin cells that get put into the air by heating systems during the winter. Some unfortunate people are allergic to both.
What Causes These Allergies?
The reason you feel symptoms of winter allergies is because of your individual genetics. These came about without any input from you, and they aren’t likely to change. While some people outgrow an allergy, most people don’t. However, just being allergic to something doesn’t make it mandatory to have in your home.
During the winter time in temperate climates, people rely on their heating systems to stay warm. While staying warm is important, it also puts a wide variety of dust particles into the air. These particles don’t affect some people, but they make other people very sick. The fact that people tend to stay inside more during the winter only exacerbates the problem.
Is There a Way to Treat Them?
There are ways you can treat winter allergies. There are anti-allergen shots you can get, and there are better furnace filters to keep down the dust in the air. Also, you can use surfaces such as solid floors and non-porous furniture to make cleaning easier and give dust less places to hide.
Winter allergies are a pain. To a certain extent, the allergies you’ve got are the ones you’re going to be stuck with. However, you can deal with them and make their impact on your life far less irritating.

Top Tips For Being Green In The Kitchen
In this day and age there is a lot of pressure on people to be more aware of how their actions, big or small, can affect the environment in a negative way. To be “green” you must follow the idea that we should all be doing more in order to cut down on the negative effect we’re having on the planet, and a great place to put that into motion is in your kitchen.
Considering this, here’s a couple of tips on how you can become greener in your kitchen
Buy Quality
Although it might costs more to begin with, buying quality cookware will ensure its longevity and reliability over cheaper options. Not only will this potentially save you money in the long term, but will also create less waste which is much better for the environment.
Getting a stainless steel sink and kitting your kitchen out with other high quality pieces of equipment is also a great idea.
Make a few changes
It’s surprising how making only a few little changes to your everyday doings can drastically alter how you effect the environment. Look at fitting energy saving light bulbs in your kitchen and possibly your whole home. They use less heat in the creation of light, so they use less energy which equals less waste.
Another thing you can do is replace the bags you use when shopping for food. If you tend to use the plastic bags the supermarket provides, consider bringing your own instead. Either reuse old plastic bags or invest in a large cloth bag.
Control the quantities
Start by only buying what you need. Anything extra is going to be a waste, not only of food but also of your money. If you’re cooking up something that could be kept for a few days, make a few portions of it and put it in the oven all at once.
You’ll use less energy by making more of it together, as you won’t have to keep heating the oven up each time to make it. There are even some foods that taste better if they’ve been left for a few days, certain kinds of soup for instance.
Manage your waste
Begin by recycling whatever you can, there’s lots of food packaging that you can now recycle rather than send to a landfill. Not only does recycling cut down on the amount of non-biodegradable materials made each year but it cuts down on those same non-biodegradable materials ending up in a landfill where they will damage the environment for longer than we’ll be around to see.
You don’t even necessarily have to send your waste to a recycling centre in order for it to be used again. You can reuse the bottles and jars in your home straight away yourself.
It isn’t just non-biodegradable materials like plastics that damage the environment in a landfill, but food waste can also cause problems as it degrades. If you’re interested in helping out the environment more consider something like an insinkerator for better disposing of your food waste, avoiding adding to the landfill.
Next time you’re in the kitchen or out shopping, consider some of these points. You might not just be making your life a bit greener, but also (especially in the long term) saving yourself some money too.

How Would We Survive Without Electricity?

A service we all take for granted, many of us switch on the lights in our home without sparing a thought for the electricity we are using. In fact, many of us are largely unaware of how electricity is generated and could not imagine a life without it.
Yet, a time without electricity did exist and whilst its invention remains largely unknown, the names of Thomas Edison and Luigi Galvani are now synonymous with it. For those of us who have grown up alongside this convenient service, imagining a time where lights don’t turn on at the flick of a switch is something hard to contemplate – but does that mean we couldn’t survive without electricity?
Homes without power
Of course, whilst not having electricity would be a huge shock we would soon adapt and find ways to cope with the change. Whether this involved reverting back to former sources of light (such as traditional candles) or creating new ways to power our electrical devices (such as through solar power) the end result would still be survival.
In truth, the idea that we may one day be left without electricity is somewhat far-fetched. It is reasonable to assume that the source of our electricity might change but electrical power of some description would still exist.
What are the alternatives?
For those wondering what I mean by this, the development of solar power could be the energy source of the future. The Government is already subsidising solar panels to homes willing to try the technology and a widespread roll-out of solar panels is something many people see as inevitable.
Solar panels would harness power for our electrical goods in a more environmentally friendly manner as it is a renewable source of energy and does not cause unnecessary damage to the environment. Traditional electricity, on the other hand, relies on the consumption of fossil fuels and emits harmful carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
Solar energy facts
Solar energy offers households a number of benefits – including reduced energy bills and lower carbon emissions. For those interested in what this power source has to offer, here are some facts you should know:
- Solar energy is responsible for 20% of energy use.
- Consumers who fit solar panels to their home can save as much as 800 pounds (about C$1000) a year through Feed-in-Tariffs (FITs) which were introduced in April 2010 to offer a rebate on energy costs to these customers. Regardless of what source you use for your household electricity, those interested in reducing their bills can compare different tariffs and electricity prices to find the best deal.
- High profile scientists such as Albert Einstein were familiar with the concept of solar power. In fact, Einstein won a Noble Prize for his work with photovoltaic cells back in 1921

5 Useful Things You’re Throwing Away
What would you say if I told you that you were throwing perfectly useful items into the trash? Maybe you think you’re pretty green and frugal – you don’t waste a lot, or you know you’re already recycling as much as you can for your area. Well, chances are that you’re wasting at least one of these common household items by tossing it. Read on to see if you’re missing these environmentally friendly money savers.
Jars
Have you purchased jam or jelly, soup, pasta sauce, beans, or fruit in a glass jar lately? If you threw away that jar, you’ve wasted a perfectly good food storage container Glass is clear, so you can actually see what’s in there, and jars used in manufacturing usually don’t break easily. Plus some experts have started recommending using glass in favour of plastics, some of which may leach BPA into our food. If you’re willing to wash out a few jars, you can make that transition without spending a dime.
Dryer Sheets
Used dryer sheets can be used for dusting computer screens, TV screens, and window blinds or shades; their anti-static properties may even rub off a bit, discouraging dust from settling again soon. You can use them to pick up pet hair, human hair, and dust bunnies from surfaces and hardwood floors, or you can scrub away bugs from your windshield or soap scum from the shower.
Cardboard Boxes
Keeping a couple of cardboard boxes on hand is like insurance for your household storage needs and your budget – flatten a few and keep them ready for when you need them. When you want a box at the last minute, you won’t have to shell out five to ten bucks for one at a store Ditto for when you need to mail a package. If you have kids, a cardboard box is fantastic, fun, cheap bit of entertainment that can give them hours of fun and you hours of quiet. Most pets love to play in boxes too. And if you really don’t want to keep those boxes, sell them on Craigslist; you can make a profit on those things, you know!
Broken Stuff
How often do your throw something away without really trying to fix it, whether it’s a toy or an electronic or an appliance? If you’re not confident in your fix-it skills, you may just press a few buttons, try unplugging or restarting, get frustrated, and toss it. Why not ask a handy friend to take a look? Or just open it up yourself and take a look. If you can’t figure out how to fix it, what have you lost? Nothing, because it was headed for the trash anyway! But if you can fix it, you won’t have to replace it. Take all due care with electrical or mechanical items, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for health and safety.
Grocery Bags
Grocery bags, whether paper or plastic, have many possible second uses. They’re great for packing lunches, taking a snack to a party, or school, sorting your recycling, or packing just a couple of items when you don’t want to drag out a suitcase. If you’re a dog owner, the plastic bags are a cheap way to pick up your pet’s leavings; and if your cat is anything like mine, playing in a paper grocery bag will be the thrill of her life. Plus, some grocery stores are starting to pay you for recycling their bags; mine gives me a five cent credit for every paper bag I bring back and use again.
Have you discovered any great second uses for items that you used to throw away? Let us know in the comments!
